Evaly Executives Earn Extended Sentence in Fraud Case

In yet another fraud case, a Dhaka court has sentenced Evaly Managing Director Mohammad Rassel and his wife, Shamima Nasrin, the company’s Chairperson, to three years of rigorous imprisonment. Each has also been fined BDT 5,000.

The verdict was delivered on Sunday, April 13, by Metropolitan Magistrate M. Misbahur Rahman. As both convicts are currently absconding, arrest warrants have been issued against them.

According to case documents, the plaintiff, Md. Rajib, suffered financial losses after being defrauded by the e-commerce platform. He had paid BDT 1,237,500 to Evaly for ordered goods, which he never received. Following the non-delivery, he filed a case against the couple on charges of embezzlement. After reviewing the presented evidence and witness testimonies, the court issued the conviction.

This latest sentence follows a series of similar rulings against the duo. On January 29, both Rassel and Nasrin were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in a separate fraud case. On April 6, they received another three-year sentence in yet another case.

The string of convictions reflects growing legal accountability over the e-commerce company’s controversial operations, which left thousands of customers and merchants in financial distress.
