BAU VC Praises Ziaur Rahman’s Role
- VC says Ziaur Rahman acted according to the country’s needs
- He cites a rare global example of three family members leading a country
- Speakers call for national unity, solidarity and patriotism
Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam Sardar has said that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman did whatever the country needed at different times. He also remarked that there was no other example in the world of three members of the same family successfully taking responsibility for governing a country.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organised at BAU on Saturday morning, November 7, marking the historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
Organised by the university’s National Day Celebration Committee, the meeting, titled ‘Significance of National Revolution and Solidarity Day’, began at 10:30am at the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium.
Professor Dr Abdul Alim, the university’s student affairs adviser, chaired the event. Professor Dr Shahidul Islam, member-secretary of the National Day Celebration Committee and associate student affairs adviser, moderated the discussion.
In his remarks, Professor Dr Abdul Alim said, “November 7 was not observed over the past 17 years. Yet, during a critical period for the country, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman took the helm.”
He added, “Bangladesh comes first. Students must take responsibility for running the country.”
Speakers at the meeting discussed the historical events of November 7, 1975, and their significance, highlighting the importance of conveying that history to the younger generation. They also stressed the need to uphold the spirit of national unity, solidarity and patriotism.
Other speakers included Professor Dr Sadeka Haque, Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad, university Registrar Dr Helal Uddin, Treasurer Dr Mozammel Haque, Controller of Examinations Professor Dr Zowarder Faruk Ahmed, former student affairs adviser Professor Dr Shahidul Haque, Sonali Dal President Professor Dr Hammadur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Professor Dr Ali Reza Faruk and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Professor Dr Masum Ahmad.
Among the other speakers were BAU Chhatra Dal Convener Md Atikur Rahman, Member Secretary Md Shafiqul Islam, Senior Joint Convener A M Shoaib, Officers’ Council President Agriculturist Dr A K M Mahbubur Rashid Golap and Direct Officers’ Association Convener Agriculturist Wahida Yasmin, along with leaders of various employee organisations.
Teachers, students, officers, employees and leaders of different student organisations attended the event.
