Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) has imposed financial penalties on 11 students over allegations involving ragging, physical and psychological abuse, and cyberbullying. Students who fail to pay the fines may face suspension for periods ranging from one to four semesters.

The decisions were announced in separate office orders issued by the university’s Registrar’s Office on Monday, October 26. The penalties followed a review of an investigation committee’s report and were based on decisions taken at the 42nd meeting of the university’s Disciplinary Board on April 28.

According to the orders, Moin Uddin, a student of the Faculty of Agriculture from the 2023–24 academic session, was fined Tk 20,000 over repeated ragging incidents on Paris Road, at M. Keramat Ali Hall and outside the hall. Failure to pay the fine will result in suspension for four semesters. AHM Samiul Hasan, from the same academic session, was fined Tk 10,000 and faces a two-semester suspension for non-payment.

For the same incidents, Mohammad Muntasir Mahmud, from the 2021–22 academic session, was fined Tk 10,000, with a two-semester suspension in case of non-payment. The order also imposed fines of Tk 5,000 each on Md Ahsan Habib Lincoln, from the 2021–22 session, and Tanfiz Nur Ratul and Md Ahnaf Shahriar, from the 2024–25 session. Each faces a one-semester suspension if the fine remains unpaid.

Shibbil Mia and Naim Hossain Rumman, students of the Faculty of Business Administration from the 2023–24 session, and Fayaz Mahmud Shahid of the Faculty of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) were each fined Tk 15,000 over allegations of involvement in planning, leading and carrying out ragging. Failure to pay will result in suspension for three semesters.

Mitul Pal, a student of the Faculty of Business Administration, was fined Tk 5,000 in connection with the same case. Non-payment will lead to a one-semester suspension.

In a separate case involving allegations of cyberbullying, threats and harassment, Md Mohiuddin Alam, a student of the Faculty of Law and Land Administration (LLA) from the 2024–25 academic session, was fined Tk 10,000. He faces a two-semester suspension if he fails to pay.

The office orders further state that the students could face permanent expulsion if they are found to have engaged in further violations of university discipline. Their academic activities will remain suspended if they fail to pay the fines within the stipulated period.
