‘Government Will Not Tolerate Disinformation and Cyberbullying’
Information Adviser Dr. Jahed Ur Rahman says the government will not tolerate disinformation and cyberbullying and is forming a legal panel to combat digital offences while ensuring citizens' rights.
“The government will not tolerate disinformation and cyberbullying under any circumstances. Necessary measures are being taken to ensure citizens’ safety,” said Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Dr. Jahed Ur Rahman.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at the weekly press briefing on government activities and current affairs held at the Press Information Department (PID) conference room at the Secretariat on Tuesday (July 20).
Dr. Jahed Ur Rahman said citizens are free to criticize the government, but no one has the right to violate the law. He stressed that the government would not engage in repression, although the state would exercise lawful and proportionate force whenever necessary.
He said the Ministry of Information has formed a panel of lawyers in the public interest to tackle disinformation and cyberbullying, adding that an official notification would be issued soon. He urged those involved in spreading false information to refrain from such activities, saying the initiative is aimed at ensuring a safer digital environment for citizens.
On law and order, the adviser said the Ministry of Home Affairs is continuing efforts to curb crime and narcotics. He acknowledged that long-standing institutional problems cannot be resolved overnight but noted that action is being taken gradually against officials found responsible for misconduct.
He added that the police have largely regained confidence, although they need a supportive environment to perform their duties effectively.
Commenting on the cabinet, he said the Prime Minister would make necessary changes if any minister failed to meet expectations.
Referring to compensation for victims of the Milestone aircraft accident, Dr. Jahed Ur Rahman described the delay in disbursing announced compensation as a government failure and said payments would be made after proper verification.
He also reiterated that enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings are unacceptable.
Chief Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Dr. Md. Alam Mostafa, and senior officials of the ministry and the Press Information Department were present at the briefing.
