Major hardware defect reports have emerged shortly after Apple’s long-awaited first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, officially went on sale. As the device reached customers worldwide, a series of complaints surfaced regarding its screen and folding mechanism.

Users have shared photos and videos on social media and the popular online forum Reddit, reporting that the phone’s hinge begins to feel unusually stiff within just a few days—or even hours—of use. When users subsequently apply greater force to unfold the screen completely, the hinge reportedly produces a clicking or cracking sound. At the same time, permanent coloured lines appear on the internal foldable display, accompanied by pixel damage.

Causes and Extent of the Problem

Photos and information shared by customers indicate a specific pattern of defects: a vertical line running down the centre of the screen, accompanied by parallel lines on its right side.

Technology analysts and affected customers suspect that a mechanical fault or a weak hinge mechanism is placing excessive pressure on the foldable screen, damaging the inner display. Although early units sent to technology reviewers reportedly did not exhibit the problem, the major defect is believed to have affected a particular batch of commercially manufactured devices.

Replacement Shortages and Apple’s Response

Customers affected by the issue have been advised by Apple to contact Apple Support or their respective mobile network operators. Apple is reportedly assuring them that damaged handsets will be replaced.

However, soaring global demand for the new foldable iPhone, combined with limited supply, is making immediate replacements difficult to obtain. The situation is particularly challenging for customers with higher-storage variants, such as the 1TB and 2TB models.

Owners whose devices exhibit these problems have been advised to contact AppleCare promptly rather than delay seeking assistance.
