Google has begun discussions with chip design giant Marvell Technology to develop two new artificial intelligence (AI) chips. According to a report by the technology news outlet The Information, the two chips under discussion are being designed to improve the efficiency of AI model performance.

According to the report, one of the chips is a Memory Processing Unit (MPU), which will work alongside Google’s own Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). The other is a completely new TPU, which will be specifically designed to run AI models.

Google has long been trying to establish its TPUs in the market as an alternative to Nvidia’s GPUs. To demonstrate the success of its massive investments in the AI sector, TPU sales have become an important source of revenue for Google Cloud.

The Information reports that the two companies aim to finalize the design of the MPU within next year and move it into trial production. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the report. Neither Google nor Marvell has provided any official comment on the matter so far.

Significance in the Context of Bangladesh

This initiative by technology giants like Google and Marvell indicates that the demand for and competition in AI chips will increase further in the coming days. This also creates opportunities for Bangladesh. Recently, the government has taken initiatives to prepare the information technology sector for AI and semiconductor design. Competition in producing such chips in the global market will help Bangladesh become more aware and better prepared to build an AI-driven digital economy in the future.
