DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has initiated the development of a dedicated software infrastructure to make the issuance of accreditation passes for journalists covering elections more transparent, automated, and secure. To establish the foundational architecture, a 12-member committee has been constituted to formulate the Software Requirement Specification (SRS). EC Public Relations Director Abdul Momin Sarkar confirmed the technological initiative on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

According to the official directive approved by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, the committee is mandated to engineer the procedural and technical parameters governing software development. The body will outline systematic recommendations and draft the functional SRS, encompassing the end-to-end operational pipeline from initial online registration to credential verification, database archiving, and eventual card issuance.

EC Additional Secretary Shamsul Alam has been appointed convener of the committee, with PR Director Abdul Momin Sarkar serving as a member. The committee also integrates media stakeholders, including Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) President Kazi Emad Uddin Jebel and General Secretary Ikram-ud Daulah, alongside designated representatives from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Press Information Department (PID), and relevant EC information technology officers.

Technical observers note that legacy manual issuance procedures often faced administrative bottlenecks and verification challenges during peak election cycles. The deployment of a dedicated web-based credentialing application and central database aims to streamline identity validation, eliminate duplications, and ensure expedited clearances for certified media professionals across Bangladesh.
