Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has become the first person in history to reach trillionaire status, with his net worth surpassing the unprecedented $1 trillion mark following the long-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) of his rocket company, SpaceX. The milestone was confirmed in a special report published by Bloomberg News on Saturday.

Ahead of its market debut, SpaceX shares were priced at $135 each, valuing Musk’s personal stake in the company at approximately $860 billion. Combined with the post-IPO surge in SpaceX stock and the value of his holdings in electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, Musk’s paper wealth crossed the historic $1 trillion threshold.

Influence, Controversy and Criticism

Musk’s ascent to trillionaire status comes amid growing debate over his influence in U.S. politics and public administration.

During the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Musk reportedly contributed nearly $300 million to Donald Trump’s campaign. Following Trump’s victory, Musk became directly involved in policymaking and was appointed to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency.

Political analysts argue that the department failed to achieve its stated goal of significantly reducing federal spending and instead cancelled several major government contracts without comprehensive review.

One of the most controversial aspects of Musk’s role has been his reported involvement in efforts to dismantle several federal agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). A recent report from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health claimed that disruptions to health and humanitarian assistance programs resulting from these decisions contributed to severe consequences in vulnerable regions around the world.

New Sources of Wealth

Musk’s wealth may continue to grow substantially in the coming years.

Last year, Tesla shareholders approved a special compensation package that could potentially add another $1 trillion to his fortune if the company achieves specific market valuation and production targets.

In addition, under SpaceX’s corporate structure, Musk is prohibited from directly selling approximately one billion shares he owns until the company fulfills its long-term goal of establishing a permanent human settlement on Mars. Although SpaceX has acknowledged that achieving this objective remains highly uncertain, Musk can still use these shares as collateral to secure massive loans from financial institutions.

This strategy allows him to access substantial liquidity without selling shares and potentially without triggering large tax obligations.

Tight Control Over SpaceX

Despite becoming a publicly traded company, SpaceX remains firmly under Musk’s control.

The company’s governance structure reportedly grants Musk more than 80 percent of the voting power, enabling him to maintain decisive influence over board appointments and major corporate decisions.

As a result, shareholders have limited ability to challenge management decisions. With SpaceX positioned at the forefront of the rapidly expanding space exploration and satellite internet industries, Musk’s influence now extends beyond his status as the world’s wealthiest individual, reinforcing his position as one of the most powerful corporate leaders of the modern era.
