Student-Built Underwater Robot to Represent Bangladesh on the Global Stage in Canada
Exploring the Unknown Blue Frontier: MIST MAVIROV Heads to the 2026 MATE ROV World Championship
More than 90 percent of the world's oceans remain unexplored. Inspired by the challenge of discovering this vast underwater frontier, a group of engineering students from Bangladesh began a journey that has now led them to one of the world's most prestigious underwater robotics competitions.
MIST MAVIROV, a student-led underwater robotics team from the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Bangladesh, has officially qualified for the 2026 MATE ROV World Championship. The international event will take place in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, beginning on June 23, 2026.
The 26-member team is scheduled to depart for Canada on June 18, with all visas and travel arrangements already confirmed.
Built by Students, Engineered for the Deep
At the heart of the team's success is MAVIRIO, a custom-designed Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) developed entirely by students. From concept design and mechanical fabrication to electronics integration, software development, testing, and deployment, every aspect of the vehicle has been built in-house.
The ROV features high-resolution cameras, powerful underwater lighting, a 2-DOF robotic manipulator arm, and a multi-purpose gripper. These systems enable the vehicle to perform complex underwater tasks such as environmental monitoring, biological sample collection, infrastructure inspection, and subsea maintenance.
From Campus Initiative to Global Competition
The journey of MIST MAVIROV began with a shared interest in marine robotics and ocean technology among MIST students. Through projects such as Leviathan 1.0, Leviathan 2.0, and Creeper 1.0, the team gradually developed the technical expertise required for international competition.
Participation in national technology events, including Bear Summit and DDI Expo, further strengthened the team's capabilities. Today, MAVIROV consists of specialists from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Development, Research and Development, Design & Graphics, and Public Relations & Marketing divisions.
The team operates under the mentorship of Major Mohammad Naim Uddin, who provides technical and research guidance.
The Challenge Ahead
At the MATE ROV World Championship, teams are evaluated based on mission performance, engineering and communication, and safety standards.
MAVIRIO will be tasked with completing realistic underwater workplace missions, including collecting biological samples from a simulated coral ecosystem, servicing subsea observatories, installing offshore energy connections, and operating under challenging ice-covered conditions.
Success will depend not only on technical excellence but also on teamwork, piloting precision, reliability, and professional engineering documentation.
‘We Want Robots to Replace High-Risk Underwater Operations’
According to Mahibul Haque, CEO of MIST MAVIROV, the team was founded with a vision that extends beyond competition.
“We started as a group of passionate engineering students determined to create meaningful impact. Since more than 90 percent of the ocean remains unexplored, we chose to focus on the vast blue frontier beneath the surface,” he said.
“The word ‘Mavi’ symbolizes the blue of the ocean. Our goal is to develop underwater robotic technologies that can eventually replace high-risk diving operations with safer and more efficient robotic solutions.”
He added that the team is equally committed to inspiring younger generations to pursue careers in marine robotics while contributing to sustainable ocean exploration and conservation.
A New Chapter for Bangladesh’s Marine Robotics Ambitions
Competing against leading universities and research institutions from around the world, MIST MAVIROV represents more than a student project. It symbolizes Bangladesh’s growing capabilities in advanced engineering, robotics, and applied research.
As the world increasingly focuses on the blue economy, ocean sustainability, and autonomous technologies, the team's participation at the MATE ROV World Championship highlights the potential of Bangladeshi innovation on the global stage.
