A suspect has been detained following a shooting incident near the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. According to law enforcement sources, the detained individual is 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen, a resident of Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles. He was taken into custody with a weapon near the event venue on the night of April 25 (Saturday), local time, while President Donald Trump and other top officials were present.

According to public records cited by U.S. media outlet CNN, Allen was working part-time as a teacher at a coaching and test preparation institution called “C2 Education.” In December 2024, the institution recognized him as “Teacher of the Month.”

In terms of educational background, Allen completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2017. He later obtained a master’s degree in Computer Science from California State University–Dominguez Hills.

During his academic years, he gained local media attention by developing a prototype emergency braking system for a wheelchair.

Allen also identified himself as a video game developer. He created an indie game titled “Boredom,” which is available on the Steam platform. Additionally, he was reportedly working on another game titled “First Law.”

According to data from the Federal Election Commission, he donated $25 to the election campaign of U.S. politician Kamala Harris in 2024.

Authorities have stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. President Donald Trump confirmed that one police officer was injured in the incident. Speaking at a press briefing following the event, Trump said he was concerned but not overly alarmed, noting that the role of the president inherently carries risk.

“Look, I’m here to do a job. The presidency is dangerous. It’s part of the job. I don’t think there’s any job more dangerous than being president. But I love the country. I’m very proud. We’re proud of what we’ve done for the country,” he said.

In a lighter remark, he added, “If I had known the presidency was this risky, I might not have run.”

Television footage from the event showed Trump seated at a dining table when a loud noise was heard inside the hotel’s banquet hall. Shortly afterward, his security personnel quickly surrounded him. The dinner event was taking place inside the banquet hall at the time.

Following the incident, both the President and Vice President, along with First Lady Melania Trump, were escorted away from the stage at the venue. A source confirmed that they are all safe.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is held annually for journalists covering the U.S. presidency at the White House. In addition to journalists, media personalities were also in attendance. The shooting incident caused panic among attendees.
