In the intensifying battle for dominance in artificial intelligence (AI), Google has made a major strategic bet. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in AI startup Anthropic, widely regarded as a key rival to OpenAI. According to a Bloomberg report, a portion of this massive investment will be in cash, while the remainder will be provided in the form of cloud computing services, or “compute.”

Investment Scale and Objectives
Anthropic stated that Google is currently making a direct investment of $10 billion based on a valuation of $350 billion. The remaining $30 billion will be invested if Anthropic meets certain predefined business and technological performance targets in the future. Driven by strong investor interest, many analysts believe the company’s actual valuation could exceed $800 billion.

New Model ‘Mythos’ and Security Concerns
The investment announcement comes as Anthropic unveils its most powerful new AI model, “Mythos.” The company claims the model demonstrates exceptional capabilities in cybersecurity and solving complex coding challenges. However, due to concerns over potential misuse, the model has not yet been made publicly available. Anthropic is currently conducting risk assessments of the model in collaboration with selected organizations.

The Battle for Compute Power
In the AI race, computing power—or “compute”—has become more valuable than capital itself. Just as OpenAI has entered into major agreements with Microsoft and chip manufacturers, Anthropic is also accelerating its efforts. In addition to Google’s backing, Amazon has recently invested $5 billion in Anthropic and secured a $100 billion infrastructure deal.

Google is supporting Anthropic by providing access to its advanced in-house chips, known as TPUs, which are considered one of the strongest alternatives to Nvidia chips. Under the new agreement with Google, Anthropic is guaranteed access to 5 gigabytes of compute capacity over the next five years.

Future Plans and IPO Prospects
Anthropic is not only focused on developing AI models but is also aggressively strengthening its own infrastructure. If all proceeds as planned and the investment yields positive outcomes, the company may go public as early as October this year. Industry observers believe that this partnership between Google and Anthropic could pose a significant challenge to the OpenAI–Microsoft alliance in the ongoing AI war.
