Canada Allows TikTok to Resume Operations Under New Conditions

After a prolonged legal battle, the Canadian government has allowed TikTok to continue its operations in the country. In a statement on Monday (9 March), Canada’s Minister of Industry François-Philippe Champagne said that following a national security review, TikTok has been permitted to operate in Canada, subject to certain conditions, Reuters reported.

In November 2024, Ottawa had ordered the shutdown of TikTok’s Canadian operations citing national security risks. However, in January this year, the Federal Court overturned the government directive and instructed authorities to reconsider the matter. The latest decision follows that directive.

Under the new conditions, TikTok will be required to maintain a physical office in Canada and invest in the country’s cultural sector. The platform must also implement enhanced security measures to protect the personal data of Canadian users. These measures include the introduction of new security gateways and privacy-enhancing technologies designed to prevent unauthorized access to the data of Canadian users. TikTok will also need to take additional steps to ensure the safety of underage users.

An independent third party will be appointed to monitor whether these conditions are properly implemented. TikTok has confirmed that it has accepted the conditions set by the Canadian government.

It is noteworthy that TikTok, owned by the China-controlled company ByteDance, has been facing security concerns in several countries around the world. The Canadian government said that this decision will help protect Canadian jobs while ensuring that TikTok fulfills its commitment to invest in Canada’s cultural sector.
