BTCL has suspended the trial launch of its MVNO service. Rownak Tahmina, Public Relations Officer of the organisation, confirmed the matter on Friday, 27th February.

A press release stated that the trial launch of BTCL's MVNO service has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. BTCL will inform valued customers about the marketing of BTCL MVNO SIMs at a later date.

Fayez Ahmed Taiyeb, the Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the outgoing caretaker government, who spearheaded the introduction of this new technology, said that it was a zero-budget in-house project. Initially, the plan was to conduct a zero-cost pilot with Teletalk and then move to Banglalink. He added that the political government would make decisions in its own way, which might create some disappointment. However, the team gained valuable learning on how to provision such new technologies, which would be useful in the future, Inshallah (God willing).

Previously, BTCL’s MVNO SIM and a triple-play package comprising voice, data, and content were scheduled to be initially available at the Ramna, Gulistan, and Gulshan sales centres in the capital from 15th February. This was later postponed to 27th February.

Prior to that, on 3rd February, the trial launch of the unlimited quad-play service based on the MVNO model was inaugurated for the first time at BTCL's office in Ramna, Dhaka.

Sources said that the MVNO model allows mobile services to be provided without the need for its own mobile network infrastructure. In the initial phase, BTCL planned to provide services to customers using the network of Teletalk Bangladesh Limited.

It is to be noted that the government approved BTCL to launch a trial MVNO network on 25th November last year.
