Jatiya Party candidate Shamim Ahmed, contesting the Dhaka-11 constituency with the party’s Plough symbol, has filed a writ petition seeking the cancellation of the candidacy of NCP-nominated candidate Nahid Islam over allegations of dual citizenship.

The petition claims that Nahid Islam obtained citizenship of the Caribbean island nation Dominica on April 20, 2025.

Several media outlets have published reports regarding the allegation. However, Bangladesh-based fact-checking organization Rumor Scanner stated in a fact-check published on January 20 that the passport image circulated online claiming Nahid Islam had acquired Dominican citizenship is not authentic.

According to the organization, the alleged passport is fabricated. It said a sample or template of a Dominican passport was collected from the internet and Nahid Islam’s photograph and signature were digitally inserted using technological tools to create the fake document.

Polling for the 13th National Parliamentary Election will be held on February 12. In that election, NCP leader Nahid Islam is contesting the Dhaka-11 seat as a candidate of the Jamaat Oikya Alliance.
