BNP Questions Jamaat’s ‘Hacking’ Claim over Misogynistic X Post

The claim that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s ameer’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account was hacked—made nearly nine hours after a misogynistic post was published—has been described as “questionable” by Mahdi Amin, spokesperson of the BNP’s National Election Steering Committee and adviser to the party chairperson.

Speaking at a press conference held on Sunday afternoon, February 1, at the BNP Election Steering Committee office in Gulshan, Mahdi Amin said that if the post attributed to the Jamaat ameer truly reflected his views, it would be deeply disappointing for the nation and tantamount to medieval barbarity. He argued that such degrading remarks about women have no place in a modern democratic society.

Mahdi Amin said that when an important or verified account is hacked, the first responsibility is to immediately inform the public. In this case, however, he noted that after widespread criticism erupted, a hacking claim was suddenly raised around 1:00 am, casting serious doubt on its credibility.

He further pointed out that during the relevant period, multiple posts were made from the Jamaat ameer’s Facebook account, yet no warning or clarification was issued there regarding the alleged hacking of the X account. Later, at around 3:30 am, a general diary (GD) was filed at Hatirjheel Police Station, stating that the hacking was detected at 4:55 pm. Mahdi Amin questioned why, if that were true, the GD was filed nearly 12 hours later and what justified such a delay.

He also said that the claim of regaining control of the account shortly after announcing the hacking further raised suspicion.

At the press conference, Mahdi Amin alleged that the language used in the post from the Jamaat ameer’s X account amounted to overt misogyny. He cited a translated excerpt of the post allegedly made at 4:37 pm on January 31, which stated that bringing women out of their homes in the name of modernity exposes them to exploitation, moral degradation, and insecurity—comparing it to another form of prostitution.

Mahdi Amin emphasized that the BNP has always stood for women’s personal freedom, dignity, and equal rights, both offline and online, and declared that no compromise would be made on protecting women’s honor.

The BNP chairperson’s adviser also alleged that “bot armies” were harassing women both online and offline and engaging in cyberbullying against leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

He added that women play a crucial role in the country’s economy through their labor, whether as teachers in schools, colleges, and universities or as garment workers, and questioned how such attitudes toward women could be justified.

Also present at the press conference were BNP Media Cell Convener Professor Dr. Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, Jubo Dal Central President Abdul Moneim Munna, and Swechchhasebak Dal Central Senior Vice President Yasin Ali.
