Threads Tops X in Mobile Usage
Meta’s social media platform Threads has overtaken X, owned by Elon Musk, in terms of mobile app usage. The information was revealed in a recent report by market analytics firm Similarweb, according to TechCrunch.
The report states that as of January 7 this year, Threads recorded around 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android combined. During the same period, X had approximately 125 million daily mobile users.
Analysts say this shift is not a short-term reaction to recent controversies, but rather the result of a long-term trend. Although X has recently faced scrutiny over its AI tool Grok, including investigations into allegations involving the creation of fake explicit images of minors, the rise of Threads appears to be driven by broader strategic factors.
Threads’ growth has been supported by Meta’s integrated promotion across its other major platforms—Facebook and Instagram—along with a strong focus on creators and the rapid rollout of new features. Over the past year, Threads has introduced interest-based communities, advanced filtering tools, direct messaging, long-form posts, and temporary content, enhancing user engagement.
However, X still maintains a clear lead in web usage. According to Similarweb data, X receives about 145.4 million daily web visits, while Threads attracts only around 8.5 million. Even so, Threads’ continued momentum in mobile usage is positioning it as a strong and growing contender in the social media landscape.
