International Symposium on Engineering Education Accreditation Begins in Dhaka
An international symposium titled “Quality Assurance Through Accreditation in Engineering Education” has begun in Dhaka to strengthen the standards of engineering education in the country.
The two-day symposium (8–9 December) was inaugurated at 9:00 am on Monday at the Grand Ballroom of Hotel InterContinental Dhaka. The event is jointly organized by the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) and the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).
Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Adilur Rahman Khan, attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest.
In his inaugural speech, he said, “Ensuring the quality of engineering education is one of the key prerequisites for sustainable development. Such initiatives are crucial for aligning the education system with international standards.”
Special guests included Professor Kai Sang Lock, Chairman of the Washington Accord; Ms. Daniela Iacona, Deputy Chair of the Sydney Accord; and IEB President Engineer Mohammad Rezaul Islam.
Professor Kai Sang Lock said, “Accreditation is an essential process to guarantee world-class engineering education. This international gathering in Bangladesh will open new avenues for global collaboration. After Bangladesh received full signatory status of the Washington Accord, accredited engineering degrees from Bangladesh are now recognized globally.”
He added, “To maintain this recognition, it is crucial to uphold consistent quality in engineering education. Only then can Bangladeshi engineers compete effectively on the global stage.”
Ms. Daniela Iacona said, “International accreditation plays a vital role in ensuring quality education. Bangladesh’s initiative will bring long-term benefits for future generations.”
IEB President Engineer Mohammad Rezaul Islam noted that the IEB has long been working to enhance the quality of engineering education, and this international symposium will further accelerate that effort.
The event was chaired by BAETE Chairman Professor Dr. Tanvir Manzur.
In his speech, he said, “The primary goal of this symposium is to ensure internationally benchmarked engineering education through accreditation. This event will play an effective role in achieving that objective.”
According to the organizers, the two-day symposium features technical sessions, panel discussions, research presentations, and experience-sharing sessions with participation from local and international experts.
They expect the event to help strengthen Bangladesh’s position globally in the field of engineering education and open new horizons for a quality-assured education system.
