DU Residential Halls Complete Post-Quake Technical Inspection
The subcommittee formed with experts from BUET has completed the post-earthquake inspection, technical audit, and assessment of various residential halls at the University of Dhaka. The university administration has announced that the technical assessment report will soon be made publicly available.
The information was shared through a press release issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on Sunday evening, 7 December. A meeting of the Central Coordination Committee on post-earthquake inspection, assessment, and monitoring of DU residential halls and buildings was held the same day, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan present as chief guest.
The meeting reviewed the overall progress of the technical evaluation and audit of the residential halls. It was informed that the BUET expert subcommittee has already completed the inspection and assessment work. The technical evaluation report will soon be open for all, while detailed documents will be preserved at the Engineering Office and respective halls. The administration also reported progress on repair work in three halls.
At Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, repairs have been completed in 104 of the 175 rooms. Additional ongoing work includes ceiling repairs in third-floor rooms and corridors, drop walls, parapet walls, bathrooms, mosque and dining hall roofing with ferrocement, reading room ceiling repairs, and ground-floor veranda ceiling repairs. Painting of the repaired sections is expected to begin within 2–3 days.
At Surya Sen Hall, repairs have been completed in 90 rooms across the 6th, 5th, 4th, and 3rd floors, along with repairs to the verandas/corridors on those floors and the ground-floor canteen and bathrooms. Work is still underway on the ground-floor mosque, corridors, and other levels. Painting of the completed sections is expected to begin within 2–3 days.
At Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, 13 rooms on the 5th floor of the south block have been repaired, along with painting of seven rooms. Repairs have also been completed in 20 rooms across the 4th floor, and in verandas on the 5th, 4th, and 3rd floors, the ground-floor western-side bathroom of the south block, the reading room, and the north block rooftop where ferrocement layering has been applied. Additional interior and exterior repairs on other floors are ongoing. Painting of the repaired areas is expected to begin within 2–3 days.
The meeting was presided over by Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Treasurer of the University and Chair of the Central Coordination Committee. Attendees included Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed; Professor Dr. Abdullah-Al Mamun, Provost of Salimullah Muslim Hall; Professor Dr. Md. Faruq Shah, Provost of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall; BUET Civil Engineering Department Professors Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, Dr. Rakib Ahsan, Dr. Nazrul Islam, and Dr. Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, who are members of the post-earthquake review subcommittee; DUCSU Executive Member Sarba Mitra Chakma; and the Acting Registrar, Acting Chief Engineer, and engineers from the Engineering Office.
