Honor Opens Smartphone Factory at Kaliakair Hi-Tech Park
In the month of December, the month of victory, the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, inaugurated the commercial operations and construction work of three technology-based enterprises in a single day at Kaliakair Hi-Tech Park in Gazipur.
On Tuesday, 2 December, at noon, he inaugurated the manufacturing plant of the Chinese smartphone brand Honor at Smart Hi-Tech Industry Limited, located on two acres of land in Plot 6 of Block 6 inside the park. The lower floor of the factory was adorned with banners reading “Proudly Made in Bangladesh.” The ceremony began with Qur’an recitation followed by the national anthem and the raising of the red-and-green flag.
ICT Division Secretary Shish Hayder Chowdhury, Managing Director of Hi-Tech Park Authority Mamunur Rashid Bhuiyan, BTRC Director Md. Nurunnabi, and Smart Technologies Limited Managing Director Mohammad Zahirul Islam were also present.
Speakers included Honor Bangladesh Country Director Leng Guo, South Asia President Derrick George Zheng, Supply Chain Chairman Derrick Deng, and Smart Bangladesh’s Mobile Business Manager Abdullah Al Mamun, among others.
In his remarks as chief guest, Taiyeb said Bangladesh lags behind India and Pakistan in smartphone usage due to past policy missteps—reaching only 45 percent penetration. To improve this, he said the tariff structure will be made more attractive. He added that new telecom frameworks have been introduced to reduce data prices, particularly benefiting EdTech, AgriTech and FinTech.
The ICT Secretary expressed hope that the NEIR initiative will accelerate this journey.
Zahirul Islam stated that after three years of business with Honor and receiving land at the Hi-Tech Park from the ICT Division, Smart Technologies established this factory to manufacture Honor smartphones in Bangladesh. “We aim to take these Bangladesh-made phones to the global market. By exporting ICT products, we want to become the country’s second-largest export sector,” he said.
Earlier, on 16 November, Honor’s Southeast Asia President George Zhao signed an agreement with Smart Technologies Managing Director Md. Zahirul Islam to establish the factory in Bangladesh.
It is known that the manufacturing unit, built with an investment of around Tk 120 crore within Smart Technologies’ infrastructure, has installed advanced technology for smartphone assembly, testing, and quality control. Initially, the plant will create employment for 800–1,000 people. In the future, it plans to expand production to tablets, laptops, desktops, TVs, networking equipment, speakers, cameras, and other electronics.
Officials said that starting today, smartphones produced on one assembly line are being released to the domestic market. The number of lines will soon increase to four. A portion of the devices will also be exported, contributing to foreign currency earnings.
Honor officially entered the Bangladeshi market in 2023 and has since maintained its position as one of the country’s leading smartphone brands. Its global strategy—the Honor Alpha Plan—emphasizes technological excellence, customer-focused innovation, and creating new opportunities for consumers worldwide. The establishment of the new manufacturing plant in Bangladesh reflects this commitment.
