Agriculture and Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has expressed optimism about a bumper Aman yield this season. He also noted that vegetable production has been excellent, with good market supply and stable, affordable prices. However, he acknowledged that potato farmers suffered significant losses this year due to poor prices and assured that a stimulus package will be arranged to support them.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Thursday, November 13, the Adviser said, “This season’s Aman cultivation and yield have been very good. We have already set the prices — Aman paddy at Tk 34 per kg, Atap rice at Tk 49 per kg, and boiled rice at Tk 50 per kg.”

He further mentioned that there has been no need to import onions this year, nor will there be in the near future. “The summer Murikata onions will arrive in the market soon, ensuring adequate supply. There will be no shortage of onions in the market. Some dishonest groups are trying to inflate the prices, but they will not succeed,” he asserted.

Earlier, after inspecting various research and processing centers of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) in Gabtoli, Dhaka, the Adviser said, “At the tissue culture center, potato, pineapple, date, and several flower varieties are being cultured. We import date saplings, but if locally produced saplings through this technology are widely distributed, our import dependency will decrease. We currently import potato seeds from countries like the Netherlands at a high cost. Producing high-quality potato seeds domestically would be highly beneficial for our agriculture.”
