Predator Returns: “Predator: Badlands” Set for Global Release
The science fiction action franchise Predator began its journey in 1987, featuring Hollywood action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. The film received overwhelming audience response and went on to achieve major commercial success.
Over nearly four decades, the franchise has expanded to include several follow-up films, including Predator 2 (1990), Alien vs. Predator (2004), AVP: Requiem (2007), Predators (2010), The Predator (2018), and most recently, Prey in 2022.
Earlier this year, an animated spin-off titled Predator: Killer of Killers was released, offering another reimagined perspective on the conflict between humans and the mysterious interstellar hunters. The franchise’s ability to shift its settings and narratives across films has played a key role in maintaining its long-standing popularity among viewers.
Now, fans are in for fresh excitement as the series returns with a new installment, Predator: Badlands, directed by Dan Trachtenberg. The film stars American actress Elle Fanning and New Zealand actor Demetrius Shuster Kolomatangi in central roles.
The movie is set for international release on Friday, November 7, and will premiere in Bangladesh on the same day at Star Cineplex.
In the Predator universe, these extraterrestrial beings are far more advanced than humans in terms of technology. They travel to various planets to take part in a ceremonial hunting ritual—an endurance trial meant to earn warrior honor within their species. During this ritual, they hunt dangerous creatures, including humans. Once they kill their prey, they collect the skull and spine as trophies signifying their victory.
The new film places its narrative focus on a young warrior named Deck, who embarks on a perilous mission to defend his identity and honor. Deck, born with unusual physical traits—monstrous mandible claws and rows of razor-sharp teeth—harbors a deeper emotional sensitivity that makes him seem ‘weak’ to his clan. Because of this perceived weakness, his ruthless father attempts to kill him. Deck escapes to a distant planet, where an even more terrifying beast named Kalisk awaits—one so fearsome that even his father fears it. Deck vows to defeat Kalisk to reclaim his dignity and standing among his own kind.
However, Deck does not face this journey alone. Along the way, he encounters two bio-clone twin “synths.” One of them, Thea, is carefree, cheerful, and full of imperfections, forming an unusual bond with Deck. The other is a cold, flawless, emotionless hunter—gradually evolving into what may become the franchise’s new Predator figure.
As a result, this installment moves beyond the franchise’s traditionally straightforward survival storyline. Instead, Predator: Badlands explores the psychological and existential struggles of a creature hunted by its own species on a death-ridden planet. Director Trachtenberg constructs a layered narrative where emotion, philosophy, and technology intersect. The silence is heavy, danger is constant, and the fight for survival is deeply personal.
Whether Deck triumphs remains a question for the film to answer. However, critics suggest that the philosophical core of the story—seeking meaning, identity, and belonging—may ultimately become its defining highlight.
