The Bangladesh Air Force will deploy drones this year to safeguard mother hilsa, in addition to the police and navy, announced Fisheries and Livestock Affairs Adviser Farida Akhtar. She stated, “This year, alongside the police and navy, the air force will also work with drones to protect mother hilsa.”
She made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, October 1, during a visit to the Randha Prasad Saha Durga Temple in Mirzapur, Tangail.
The fisheries adviser said that, as in previous years, a 22-day ban on hilsa fishing will begin on October 4 to ensure conservation. “The initiative we undertook last year was successful, with 52.5 percent of mother hilsa being protected. This year, along with the police and navy, the air force will also be working with drones,” she noted.
She further pointed out that the main reasons for reduced hilsa stocks are the use of current nets and China nets. “That is why we will be more cautious this year. We hope to protect even more hilsa this time,” she added.
During her temple visit, Adviser for Industries Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Social Welfare Sharmin S. Murshid, British High Commissioner Sarah Cook, and Deputy Head of Mission of the Swiss Embassy Deepak Ilmar accompanied her. Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman, and other senior district officials were also present.
