Ordinance Outlaws Online Gambling and Fraud
The Cyber Security Ordinance 2025 has declared activities related to gambling, fraud, and deception in cyberspace as punishable offenses.
According to the ordinance, “if any individual creates, operates, participates in, assists with, encourages, or engages in advertising for any portal, app, or device for the purpose of online gambling in cyberspace, whether directly or indirectly, that person shall be deemed guilty of committing the offense of gambling in cyberspace. The punishment for this offense may extend to a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, or a fine not exceeding 10 million taka, or both.”
The ordinance further states, “if any individual commits fraud using cyberspace, that person shall be considered guilty of an offense and shall face a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, or a fine not exceeding 2 million taka, or both.”
In addition, “if any individual uses cyberspace to commit deception leading to a criminal act, that person shall be subject to a maximum of five years’ imprisonment, or a fine not exceeding 5 million taka, or both.”
Law enforcement agencies have already increased surveillance in this regard. At the same time, the interim government has urged all citizens to remain vigilant to curb such crimes and ensure cybersecurity.
