Cybersecurity Charter Criminalizes Cyber Crimes

The Cyber Security Ordinance 2025 has officially declared gambling, fraud, and deception in cyberspace as punishable offenses.
According to the ordinance, “if any individual creates, operates, participates in, assists with, or encourages online gambling through any portal, app, or device, or engages in advertising, directly or indirectly, for its promotion, that person will be considered guilty of gambling in cyberspace.” The punishment for such an offense includes imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to Tk 10 million, or both.
Similarly, “any individual committing fraud through cyberspace will be considered an offender,” and may face up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 2 million, or both.
Furthermore, “if any individual commits deception by using cyberspace to carry out an offense, they will face imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to Tk 5 million, or both.”
Law enforcement agencies have already stepped up monitoring in this regard. At the same time, the interim government has urged the public to remain vigilant to help curb these crimes and ensure cybersecurity.
