Tencent Taps Talent to Tighten AI Edge

China’s technology giant Tencent has hired former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu in a bid to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, according to sources familiar with the matter. Yao is expected to lead efforts to integrate AI across Tencent’s various services, Bloomberg reported.

Prior to joining Tencent, Yao worked at Google and Princeton University. He has authored nearly ten research papers on AI agents. A graduate of Tsinghua University, Yao later earned his doctorate from Princeton.

Chinese media reports suggested that Yao’s compensation package at Tencent could exceed 100 million yuan (approximately USD 14 million). However, Tencent, in a post on its official WeChat account, described the report as partly “rumor” without providing further details.

Global tech giants are currently locked in fierce competition to attract top AI researchers and specialists, offering lucrative salaries and benefits to secure an edge in the fast-evolving field of artificial intelligence.
