Ride-hailing giant Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle manufacturer Momenta have announced plans to launch pilot robotaxi services in Munich, Germany, in 2026. This marks their first publicly declared initiative on the European mainland. Initially, the vehicles will have human safety operators on board to take control if necessary, according to TechCrunch.

Founded in 2016, Momenta has been testing autonomous vehicles in China since 2018. The company currently partners with German automakers Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi to provide advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), already deployed in 400,000 vehicles.

Uber explained that Munich was chosen for its engineering heritage and strong automotive industry. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated, “For over a century, Germany has led the global auto industry. Now Munich will help shape the future of autonomous driving.”

Meanwhile, competitors Lyft and Baidu have jointly announced plans to roll out robotaxis in Germany and the United Kingdom next year, intensifying the race for leadership in Europe’s autonomous mobility market.
