Trump Team Targets DeepSeek: Potential Sanctions on Chinese AI Lab

The Trump administration is reportedly considering imposing new sanctions on DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence research lab, according to a report by The New York Times.
The proposed sanctions may include restrictions on DeepSeek’s purchase of Nvidia’s AI chips and a ban on American citizens from using its AI services.
This move is seen as part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to compete with China in the field of artificial intelligence. DeepSeek’s recent rise has stirred significant interest across Silicon Valley and Wall Street, prompting U.S. officials to explore ways to limit Chinese firms' access to American technology and consumers.
Earlier on Tuesday, the White House announced additional export restrictions on Nvidia’s AI chips destined for China—an intensified version of regulations crafted under the Biden administration.
DeepSeek has recently gained notable traction among U.S.-based AI developers. Its comparatively low-cost models have pressured even major Silicon Valley firms to deliver advanced AI solutions at lower prices.
However, some of DeepSeek’s competitive models have faced allegations of intellectual property theft. OpenAI has accused the company of creating “distilled” versions of its models, allegedly violating OpenAI’s terms of use.
