Tyre Theft Turmoil: Ten Taken from Planes
Ten new tires belonging to Biman Bangladesh Airlines were stolen from Shahjalal International Airport. The airline has filed a general diary (GD) at the airport police station and is conducting an internal investigation to identify those involved.
According to Biman Bangladesh Airlines sources on Wednesday, August 20, the theft occurred on August 16. The airline’s Assistant Manager (Security), Mosharref Hossain, filed the GD at the airport police station on August 18.
The GD stated that at 6:20 PM on August 16, ten unserviceable tires owned by Biman Bangladesh Airlines could not be found at the airport. Material Management Supervisor Md. Arman Hossain and store helper Shamsul Hossain were questioned, and they admitted removing the ten tires with the involvement of another individual.
Biman’s General Manager (Public Relations) ABM Rawshan Kabir said, “These tires are primarily associated with the landing gear. Ten such tires are missing. The airline’s security department is investigating the matter seriously. After the investigation, strict action will be taken against those responsible.”
Officer-in-Charge of the airport police, Taslima Akter, told the media, “Biman Bangladesh filed a general diary regarding the airplane tires. However, it is not a typical theft; essentially, one person allowed another to use the tires. An exchange with another airline occurred. We will investigate the matter.”
The incident comes amid rising concerns over Biman’s aircraft maintenance, as several planes have recently experienced malfunctions. According to an official, who requested anonymity, the tires were stored in an ‘auction shed’ next to the hangar. Each tire costs between $5,000 and $15,000, meaning employees potentially sold tires worth nearly a crore of taka.
