Gazipur Digital University Set for Second Name Change: Proposed as University of Frontier Technology Bangladesh

The name of Gazipur Digital University (GDU) is poised to change for a second time. The Ministry of Education has proposed renaming the institution as University of Frontier Technology Bangladesh (UFTB). The proposal is currently under review by the Cabinet Division and will take effect upon approval from the advisory council.

Sources in the Ministry of Education confirmed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) initially recommended the name change, listing four potential alternatives. The ministry, drawing from those suggestions, finalized the proposed name University of Frontier Technology Bangladesh.

An official from the University Branch of the Secondary and Higher Education Division stated, “The new name for Gazipur Digital University has been selected and is presently awaiting clearance from the Cabinet Division. Upon approval, an official gazette will be issued to formalize the change.”

Originally established in 2016 in Kaliakoir, Gazipur, the university was known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University, Bangladesh (BDU). However, under the interim administration this February, the university’s name was changed to Gazipur Digital University (GDU), along with changes to several other institutions.

The renaming sparked considerable backlash among the university’s students. They initially rallied for the name Bangladesh Digital University, staging various protests including petitions, human chains, academic strikes, rail blockades, and campus shutdowns.

As their demands remained unmet, students resorted to a hunger strike in front of the UGC headquarters. On May 21, during the ongoing hunger strike, UGC member Professor Tanzimuddin Khan held a meeting with the education adviser and reached a preliminary decision regarding another name change for the university.
