Meta Makes a Move on CapCut: ‘Edits’ Video‑Creation App Rolls Out Globally

Meta has quietly flipped the switch on “Edits,” a free video‑editing application positioned as a direct rival to ByteDance’s wildly popular CapCut. The app is now live worldwide on iOS and Android, Meta confirmed to TechCrunch.

Edits packs a creator‑centric tool‑set:

  • AI‑assisted storyboard planning and image‑to‑video generation

  • a search engine for trending audio and full access to Instagram’s licensed music library

  • green‑screen compositing, multi‑layer timeline editing and auto‑captioning

  • export without any watermark—a feature CapCut reserves for premium tiers.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said Meta may later introduce paid add‑ons, but insisted the core suite will remain free. The company hopes Edits will serve creators “wherever they publish,” including YouTube Shorts and TikTok, not just Instagram Reels or Facebook.

Upcoming roadmap items under consideration include AI “Modify” effects, key‑frame animation tools and real‑time collaborative editing, according to Meta engineers.

The launch intensifies competition in the booming short‑form video tooling market, signalling Meta’s determination to keep creators inside its ecosystem—even before they hit “share.”
