Google Begins Testing Fully AI-Powered Search Mode

Search giant Google has officially begun testing a fully artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search mode. Instead of displaying a list of links, this new AI-driven search model will answer queries in a conversational manner, similar to ChatGPT. According to the British daily The Independent, Google’s AI search mode is currently available only to Google One AI Premium subscribers on a paid basis. However, it may eventually be made accessible to all users, similar to other AI tools.

To support this new development, Google has also introduced an update to its "AI Overview" feature. Users will no longer be required to sign in to access AI Overview, meaning nearly 5 billion people worldwide will be able to use Google with or without an account.

In a blog post about the new AI model, Google stated, “You can ask this AI-powered search mode anything that comes to your mind. It will provide more effective answers along with relevant web links. The AI mode is particularly helpful for questions that require further research, comparisons, and reasoning. You can ask it about intricate topics that have been frequently searched before. It allows you to explore new ideas, compare various options, and receive informative AI-driven responses, including helpful links.”

Meanwhile, Google is facing legal action over its controversial "AI Overviews" feature. Recently, the U.S.-based education service company Chegg filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging that the AI feature has significantly impacted its internet traffic and revenue. The company claims that Google's AI-driven search results have dramatically reduced user engagement with its services.
