Partnership for Shared Prosperity
Tarique Seeks Japanese Investment in ICT and Energy
- Bangladesh seeks stronger cooperation in ICT, energy and infrastructure
- The prime minister emphasised Japanese investment, technology transfer and skilled employment
- Railways, deep-sea ports and foreign direct investment are also priorities
Bangladesh is seeking to accelerate economic growth through Japanese investment and technology transfer, particularly in information and communication technology (ICT), energy and modern infrastructure. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed his determination to turn the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and Japan into a driver of economic growth, job creation and shared prosperity, urging Japanese investors and businesses to explore opportunities in Bangladesh.
Tarique made the remarks at a joint press conference following a bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the Kantei, the Japanese prime minister’s office in Tokyo, on Tuesday, October 27. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in energy, ICT, railways, infrastructure, deep-sea ports and foreign direct investment.
The prime minister said there was an opportunity to take bilateral relations to a new level through greater cooperation and partnerships based on mutual interests. His government is committed to working with Japanese partners to unlock Bangladesh’s potential through productive investment, technology transfer, skilled employment and mutually beneficial business ventures.
ICT and energy at the centre of cooperation
Tarique placed particular emphasis on ICT and energy as important areas for expanding bilateral cooperation. His remarks highlighted opportunities for Japanese companies to contribute to Bangladesh’s technological capabilities and industrial development through technology transfer, productive investment and stronger business partnerships.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to greater cooperation in the energy sector. Discussions covered potential collaboration in other key areas, including railways, infrastructure and deep-sea ports. Increased investment and technical cooperation in these sectors could help accelerate development projects and create employment opportunities.
Speaking about the bilateral discussions, Tarique said the two leaders had held productive talks on a range of bilateral, regional and international issues. Concrete steps were taken during the visit to deepen relations through the exchange of agreements and memorandums of understanding in several important areas. The outcomes of the meeting and the two countries’ shared priorities will be outlined in a joint statement.
Japanese investment and job creation
The prime minister urged Japanese investors, businesses and financial institutions to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh. He said economic cooperation could be expanded through productive investment and technology transfer, creating employment opportunities and benefits for both countries.
“Together, we can build a more stable and prosperous future for our two great nations,” he said.
Tarique also called for a partnership that would serve the people of both countries and create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Building on a longstanding friendship
Tarique expressed gratitude to Takaichi and the people of Japan for their warm welcome and hospitality. He is visiting Japan on an official trip leading a Bangladeshi delegation at the invitation of the Japanese prime minister.
Emphasising Japan’s special place in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh, Tarique said mutual respect, trust and shared aspirations for peace, prosperity and stability form the foundation of the friendship between the two countries.
Noting that Japan was among the early countries to recognise Bangladesh following its independence in 1971, Tarique said Japan had been one of Bangladesh’s most valued development partners for more than five decades. Japan has made significant contributions to the country’s socioeconomic progress and infrastructure development.
Earlier on Tuesday, Tarique was formally welcomed at the Kantei in Tokyo at 11:30 am local time. He received a guard of honour, and the two leaders introduced the members of their respective delegations. The bilateral summit between the two prime ministers began at 11:45 am.
