PMO Mobilizes 20 Special Enforcement Teams To Accelerate Dhaka Cleanliness Drive
Aedes Larvae In Govt Housing To Risk Fines And Allotment Cancellations
- Strict penalties and allotment revocations ordered over breeding sites in quarters and public hospitals
- Re-excavation of 55 canals and beautification across Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Banani, and Hatirjheel lakes underway
- Fiber-board bins to prevent theft; visual urban transformation anticipated within two months
Warning of uncompromising enforcement against vectors of mosquito-borne diseases, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has announced that hefty financial penalties and cancellation of official housing allotments will be enforced if unhygienic conditions or Aedes mosquito larvae are detected within government quarters and institutional premises.
The directives were issued on Monday, 26 October 2026, during a high-level review session on the implementation and monitoring of Dhaka’s municipal cleanliness drive, held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in Tejgaon.
The state minister observed that while the Prime Minister remains steadfast in transforming Dhaka into an equitable and liveable metropolis, recent field inspections across state-run healthcare facilities and staff colonies revealed alarming negligence regarding stagnant water and vector breeding. Addressing the designated monitoring squads, he stressed that officials represent the executive authority directly and must initiate instant legal prosecutions and punitive financial penalties without bureaucratic compromise wherever violations are identified.
Outlining ongoing hydrological restoration, Mir Shahe Alam highlighted that RAJUK and the Dhaka South City Corporation are executing joint environmental clean-up and landscaping initiatives across Hatirjheel, Dhanmondi, Banani, and Gulshan lakes. Simultaneously, heavy dredging, retaining wall construction, and protective safety netting are underway across 29 canals under Dhaka North City Corporation and 26 canals under Dhaka South City Corporation. To eliminate municipal equipment theft, authorities have also decided to replace standard metal roadside dustbins with reinforced fiber-board alternatives.
To operationalize the cleanliness roadmap, 20 high-level special monitoring committees—led by Director-rank officials from the Prime Minister’s Office—have been deployed across 20 administrative zones spanning both city corporations. The state minister expressed confidence that the sustained ground interventions would yield a visible transformation in urban sanitation within the next 30 to 60 days.
Presided over by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister A B M Abdus Sattar, the coordination conference was attended by State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahammad Sohel Manjur alongside members of the central inspection committees.
