Christopher Nolan's upcoming film 'The Odyssey' has generated enormous excitement among movie enthusiasts. It has already become a major talking point as the first feature-length film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm celluloid film. The movie will be released in both IMAX 70mm and Digital IMAX formats worldwide, but the viewing experience varies significantly depending on the projection technology used by each theater.
IMAX 70mm delivers what is widely regarded as the most authentic and immersive cinematic experience ever developed. The format offers an image quality comparable to 18K resolution, making it dramatically sharper than conventional cinema projection.
Instead of the traditional widescreen format, IMAX 70mm uses a towering 1.43:1 aspect ratio projected onto a massive 59-by-79-foot screen that fills nearly the entire field of view. Its water-cooled xenon lamp produces approximately 7.5 times more brightness than a standard cinema projector.
However, the technology is extremely expensive and technically demanding. As a result, only 39 theaters worldwide are equipped to screen IMAX 70mm films—24 in the United States, 9 in Canada, and the remaining 6 across other countries.
In regions without IMAX 70mm projectors, Digital IMAX, also known as IMAX with Laser, serves as the next best option.
Digital IMAX offers up to 4K resolution. Although this is only about one-quarter of the effective resolution of IMAX 70mm film, it remains significantly sharper than standard 2K digital projection. Laser projection also delivers exceptional brightness, color accuracy, and contrast.
Most Digital IMAX theaters, however, use a 1.90:1 aspect ratio, meaning viewers lose a portion of the image at the top and bottom compared to the full IMAX 70mm presentation.
Another traditional format is Standard 70mm, which is larger than conventional 35mm film but smaller than IMAX 70mm.
Using a 2.20:1 widescreen aspect ratio, Standard 70mm provides image quality roughly equivalent to 6K resolution—about one-third of IMAX 70mm's detail. Even so, it still offers richer depth, texture, and the distinctive cinematic feel of celluloid compared with conventional digital projection.
Despite decades of technological advancement, no format has fully replicated the scale, depth, and visual richness of IMAX 70mm. For audiences hoping to experience Christopher Nolan's cinematic vision exactly as intended, choosing the right theater and projection technology may ultimately be just as important as watching the film itself.
