iPhone Photos AI Upgrade
Apple has introduced a major set of artificial intelligence-powered editing tools in the Photos app, aiming to completely transform the photo-taking and editing experience for iPhone users. The announcement was made at the WWDC 2026 event held at Apple Park in California. The new features are powered by Apple’s generative AI system, Apple Intelligence.
The update focuses on three key AI tools designed to make photo editing more intuitive, powerful, and realistic:
1. 3D ‘Reframe’: Smarter angle correction
The new Reframe tool allows users to adjust the perspective of a photo even after it has been taken. By dragging on the image, users can change the viewing angle as if the camera had been positioned differently at the moment of capture.
As the frame is adjusted in real time, empty areas appear around the image with a soft blur effect. Apple’s generative AI then intelligently fills those gaps while preserving the original realism of the photo, avoiding visual distortion.
2. ‘Extend’ Tool: Expanding the canvas
The Extend feature lets users enlarge the boundaries of a photo without cropping important elements. Using a pinch-out gesture, the image frame can be expanded, allowing straightening of tilted horizons or improving composition.
Instead of cutting parts of the image, the AI generates missing background details, seamlessly extending the scene beyond the original frame.
3. Enhanced ‘Cleanup’ Tool
Apple has also upgraded its popular object removal tool, Cleanup, using generative AI. Users can remove unwanted objects such as passersby or background distractions with a simple tap, brush, or circular selection.
The AI then reconstructs the background in a highly realistic way, blending the edited area naturally with the surrounding environment.
These features are currently available in the developer beta version and are expected to roll out to users with the iOS 27 update around September–October. Apple has indicated that these premium AI editing tools will be limited to iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 series, and newer devices.
