Fuel Pass App Pilot: Digital Fuel Distribution System Set for Nationwide Rollout
Although the ‘Fuel Pass’ mobile application (app) has initially been launched on a pilot basis at seven fuel pumps in the capital Dhaka, the government is planning to bring all districts of the country under this system by May. According to sources, while the process of fuel distribution using the app has begun at seven filling stations, its scope will gradually be expanded to an additional 10–15 stations.
It has been learned that IT experts from the Ministry of Energy are working with station authorities to determine how the app will be used. Testing, experimentation, and training are currently underway. Sources further indicate that the Ministry of Energy plans to roll out the system across all districts in phases by May.
Regarding the matter, Md. Mafrul Alam, Programmer (ICT Division) of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, stated that the Fuel Pass system has not yet been officially launched. The app is currently undergoing trial operations. If successful, the ministry may issue directives to introduce dedicated lanes for Fuel Pass users at filling stations or to implement the system across entire stations for all vehicles. At present, both pump operators and government officials are receiving training on the app.
It has also been reported that many fuel stations lack smartphones and internet connectivity among their staff. As a result, preparations are being made to equip them accordingly. Efforts are underway to ensure full-scale implementation by May.
According to sources, once the Fuel Pass system is introduced, users will no longer be able to purchase fuel multiple times a day at will. This is expected to significantly reduce fuel-related inconveniences. Vehicles without registration from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will not be able to access the system. Additionally, if fuel rationing limits are set, no user will be able to exceed the prescribed limit.
