Bangladesh–China Medical Collaboration: BMU Moves Toward Joint Surgery Clinic

Chinese Cultural Counsellor Mr. Li Sharpen and Third Secretary Mr. Zhu Yong met with the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Professor Dr. F M Siddiqui. The meeting was held on Wednesday, 15 April, at the VC’s office, where fruitful discussions took place on launching a joint surgery clinic at BMU with the support of China’s Kunming Medical University, as well as on higher medical education, health research, and advanced medical services.

Sources indicated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the matter may be signed soon.

According to meeting sources, four distinguished faculty members specializing in urology from Kunming Medical University in China will visit BMU within this month. They will perform various complex urological surgeries, provide training on medical services, exchange experiences, and deliver valuable knowledge and instruction in the field of urology.

Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Chairman of the Urology Department Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Salam, and Deputy Director of the Super Specialized Hospital Dr. Mahbubul Islam Khan, among others were present at the meeting.

On the same day, at the BMU VC’s office, an honorary crest was awarded to internationally renowned infectious disease specialist Professor Brian Angus for his speech delivered at an event held last year marking Evidence-Based Healthcare Day at the university.

At the MoU ceremony, Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Professor Dr. Nurun Nahar Khanam, presented a certificate of appreciation to Professor Brian Angus on behalf of the organizers. Also present were Additional Director of IQAC, Associate Professor Dr. Dine Mujahid Md. Faruk Osmani, and Associate Professor Dr. Abul Obaida.

Professor Brian Angus is currently serving in the United Kingdom as a Reader in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Oxford and as a Professor of Practice in Medical Education. He also serves as the Director of the Oxford Centre for Clinical Tropical Medicine and Global Health.

Since joining the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine in 1993, he has conducted research on severe malaria and melioidosis in Thailand and Ghana.

His current research focuses on clinical trials and vaccine development, particularly on COVID-19, malaria, influenza, HIV, chronic fatigue syndrome, and enteric fever. He also serves as a Clinical Tutor in Medicine and an Honorary Senior Clinical Scientist.

It was expressed that such initiatives and international collaborations by BMU will open new horizons in education and research in the future.
