NBR Automates Import Tax Credit in E-Return System

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has now enabled automatic crediting of advance income tax paid at the import stage directly into taxpayers’ e-returns. The successful integration of NBR’s e-return system with the customs management software ASYCUDA World makes this process seamless. The new system came into effect on Sunday, 18 January. Simultaneously, NBR has urged all individual taxpayers to file their 2025-26 income tax returns via the e-return system by 31 January.

According to NBR’s Public Relations Officer Md. Al Amin Sheikh, this integration ends long-standing difficulties for importers in claiming advance tax credits, while also simplifying e-return filing for import businesses. Now, importers no longer need to separately submit proof of advance tax paid at the import stage.

Under the new system, when an importer enters business income in the e-return, the software automatically displays the amount of advance tax paid for each bill during the relevant financial year. This imported tax is then automatically adjusted against the total payable tax, determining the final tax due.

Since the launch of online e-return filing for the 2025-26 fiscal year by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed on 4 August 2025, over 4.6 million taxpayers have registered in the e-return system, with nearly 3.3 million returns already filed. Even taxpayers for whom e-return filing is not mandatory are using the system. Notably, around 4,000 expatriate Bangladeshis have filed their 2025-26 income tax returns online via e-return.
