X Experiments: Platform Pilots ‘Pay-Per-Use’ API Model for Developers
Two years after revamping its developer program and pricing structure, social media platform X has introduced a new “pay-per-use” model for API access on a trial basis. The company is now expanding the closed beta version of this plan to include more developers, according to a report by TechCrunch.
In an announcement from its developer account, X stated, “We’re expanding our closed beta to include both new and experienced developers who want to build amazing apps on X.”
The new API page lists separate costs for different types of requests — such as posting, sending messages, or retrieving trend and bookmark data. It also features a pricing calculator, allowing developers to estimate potential expenses based on their specific usage.
Previously, X’s tier-based model applied uniform pricing to all requests. The new model, however, is expected to be more flexible as it removes monthly usage limits.
In 2023, X ended free API access, which led to the shutdown of many third-party applications. The company later introduced a $200-per-month Basic plan, a $5,000 Pro plan, and a $42,000 Enterprise plan — pricing that proved prohibitive for many developers.
With the new usage-based structure, X aims to attract back developers interested in integrating their apps with the platform or creating innovative tools for its ecosystem.
