Junior Science Olympiad Journey: Regional Rounds Conclude in Chattogram

With the participation of more than a thousand students from the Netrokona and Chattogram regions, the regional phases of the Bangladesh Junior Science Olympiad (BdJSO) 2025 came to an end.

On Saturday, August 30, the final leg of the six regional Olympiads was held in Chattogram, where over four hundred students from Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Feni, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, and Rangamati districts took part.

The Chattogram regional round was inaugurated in the morning in the presence of Professor Dr. Ujjal Kumar Deb of the Mathematics Department at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, Professor Dr. Animesh Chakraborty of the Physics Department at the same institution, Professor Dr. Adnan Mannan of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Chittagong, Professor Dr. Farhana Akter, Head of the Department of Diabetes and Hormones at Chattogram Medical College, Mr. Jamshed Ahmed Chowdhury, Executive Vice President and Regional Head of Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Abu Hena Mohammad Mostafa Jamal, Principal of CDA Public School and College, and Mr. Munir Hasan, President of the Society for the Popularization of Science in Bangladesh (SPSB).

In their presence, a one-hour and fifteen-minute examination was conducted, followed by a much-anticipated quiz session. During this interactive segment, participants had the opportunity to ask various science-related questions to the university professors.

The distinguished guests responded to the curious inquiries of the young learners.

The Chattogram round concluded with the distribution of medals and certificates among the winners. In Chattogram, 15 students were awarded in the Primary Category, 26 in the Junior Category, and 21 in the Secondary Category.

Earlier, on August 29, the Netrokona regional round was held at Dutta High School, where more than three hundred selected students from Mymensingh, Tangail, Netrokona, Jamalpur, and Sherpur districts participated. The inauguration, presided over by Md. Mojibur Rahman, Principal of Dutta High School, was graced by Md. Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan, Branch Manager of Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Netrokona, as the Chief Guest. Special Guest Md. Shafiqul Islam, Assistant Teacher of Netrokona Government Girls’ High School, was also present.

The winners from the regional rounds will compete in the national phase in Dhaka. From there, the top 60 students will be selected to attend the BdJSO Camp, where they will undergo intensive training and preparation. Based on their performance at the camp, the best six competitors will be chosen to represent Bangladesh at the 22nd International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), to be held in December in Russia.

As in previous years, BdJSO has been jointly organized by the Society for the Popularization of Science in Bangladesh (SPSB) and the Bangladesh Freedom Foundation, with Al-Arafah Islami Bank Limited as the main sponsor.
