Malaysian technology company MDT Innovations has expressed interest in investing in AgriTech, information technology and solar energy projects in Bangladesh's northern district of Panchagarh, highlighting the region's potential for green industrial development.
A four-member delegation, led by Sim Hon Wai, Chief Operating Officer of MDT Innovations, visited the Debiganj Economic Zone and several government-owned and riverside fallow lands on Friday and Saturday to assess investment opportunities. The visit was arranged at the invitation of State Minister for Water Resources and Panchagarh-2 MP Farhad Hossain Azad.
During the visit, local administration officials presented maps and detailed information on available industrial land, transportation links, land size and local workforce capacity.
On Saturday, the delegation also held discussions at the Panchagarh Circuit House with representatives of the district chamber of commerce, business leaders, importers and journalists. Deputy Commissioner Shukria Parvin and other senior district officials attended the meeting.
Speaking at the event, Sim Hon Wai said it was his first visit to Bangladesh and described Panchagarh as a region with significant development potential because of its vast flat land and favorable environment. He said MDT Innovations is evaluating opportunities in agriculture-based information technology, ICT industries and solar power generation.
He noted that green energy has become a key driver of modern industrial development and said the company is collecting data to assess the feasibility of future investments. He also cited the area's comparatively congestion-free transport environment as a positive factor for industrial growth.
State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad said the government is working to operationalize the Debiganj Economic Zone and promote balanced regional industrialization. He added that Prime Minister's Adviser on Finance and Planning Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has already visited the area, while both domestic and international investors are being encouraged to explore investment opportunities.
He expressed optimism that agriculture-based industries and foreign investment would create substantial employment opportunities and accelerate economic development in Panchagarh and the surrounding region.
