EV Sales Surge Slows in 2026 After Strong 2025 Growth

Global electric vehicle (EV) sales saw a notable rise in 2025, but the pace of growth is expected to slow in 2026, according to research firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI).

BMI data show that global EV registrations increased by nearly 20 percent in 2025, reaching about 20.7 million units. However, growth is forecast to ease to around 15 percent in 2026, reports GSMArena.

Experts attribute the slowdown primarily to weakening demand in China and the relaxation of electrification targets in several countries.

In the United States, the expiry of tax incentives has led to a sharp decline in sales across North America. In December alone, EV registrations in the region fell by approximately 39 percent.

Europe, on the other hand, recorded strong momentum in 2025, with EV sales rising by 33 percent, while growth in the rest of the world stood at 48 percent. Despite this, uncertainty has emerged in the global market due to the European Union’s easing of emission standards and policy shifts in the United States.

According to BMI’s outlook, EV sales in China may see moderate growth in 2026, but markets in Europe and North America are likely to face increased pressure in the coming year.
