Meta Measures Merit with Machine Mastery
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is set to make a major change in employee evaluations. Starting in 2026, employees’ proficiency in using artificial intelligence (AI) will formally become part of performance appraisals under the “AI-driven impact” criterion. Meta’s Head of People, Janel Gel, stated in an internal message that technology-driven impact will be a key condition for employee evaluations from next year.
Meta aims to operate the company fully under an AI-first principle. Consequently, employees across departments—from engineering and marketing to operations—will need to demonstrate how they are using advanced AI tools to increase work speed, efficiency, and outcomes. They must clearly show how AI makes their work faster, more creative, and more effective in performance reviews.
A transition period will last until the end of 2025, during which AI usage standards will not be formally included in appraisals. However, employees are encouraged to note examples of AI use in self-evaluations. Significant achievements may also be informally recognized.
To assist employees, Meta is introducing the “AI Performance Assistant,” which integrates with Meta’s chatbot Metamet and other AI tools to create performance summaries and simplify AI-based work measurement.
This trend reflects the rapidly growing global emphasis in the tech sector. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are also prioritizing employee AI usage, making AI proficiency a significant factor for professional growth alongside traditional productivity measures.
