Google Gears Up for Gesture-Based Contact Sharing on Android
Google is developing a new rapid contact-sharing technology for Android, similar to Apple’s NameDrop. The feature—spotted experimentally in a version of Google Play Services under the name “Gesture Exchange”—was reported by GSM Arena.
Apple introduced NameDrop in 2023 with iOS 17, enabling easy exchange of contact and other information simply by bringing two iPhones close together.
In Google’s test version, a section titled “Contact Exchange” appears, where NFC technology will be used. Users will be able to share their photo, phone number, or email address. A “Receive Only” option will allow users to receive information without sharing their own. Received details can be saved with a single tap, and users may directly initiate a video call or send a message from the same interface.
Although the initial rollout involves contact sharing via NFC, it is expected that file sharing may be added later. The feature’s final name has not been decided; Google may choose a simpler and more appealing name than “Gesture Exchange” or “Contact Exchange.” Development is ongoing, and it may take more time before the feature becomes fully active.
