Samsung is preparing to launch its own credit card in the United States to compete directly with Apple’s widely promoted “Apple Card.” According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the South Korean technology giant will introduce the new card in partnership with British bank Barclays, utilizing the Visa payment network. The report was also referenced by GSM Arena.

The two companies are currently engaged in “high-level discussions,” and an official announcement could be made by the end of this year. However, the timeline may be extended if ongoing talks progress more slowly than expected.

Samsung’s strategic aim is to expand its presence in consumers’ financial ecosystems, integrating more deeply into everyday financial activities. Meanwhile, Barclays views the collaboration as an opportunity to expand its market footprint in the United States.

This initiative is expected to extend beyond merely offering a credit card. Samsung is reportedly planning to introduce a range of additional financial services, including high-yield savings accounts, digital prepaid accounts, and “buy now, pay later” financing options. Barclays is likely to provide financial backing for portions of these services.

Samsung has prior experience in this space. The company launched its own branded credit cards in South Korea and the United Kingdom in 2020, and later introduced a similar product in India in 2022.

The forthcoming partnership signals Samsung’s broader ambition to position itself not only as a global consumer electronics leader but also as a competitive player in digital finance.
