Apple Advances Augmented Satellite Services
Apple is planning to expand its satellite-based capabilities on iPhones, moving beyond the current features that allow users to send emergency messages, request assistance, and access roadside help via satellite. According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, as reported by TechCrunch, the company is now developing a suite of broader features.
Among the upcoming enhancements is an API that will allow developers to integrate satellite connectivity into their own apps. Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a version of Apple Maps that can operate without cellular networks or Wi-Fi, the ability to send images via messaging over satellite, and technology that maintains a satellite connection even if the phone is not directly pointed at the sky.
"These features will allow users to navigate, communicate, and access emergency assistance more easily even when outside conventional network coverage," the report stated. It also noted that Apple has plans to eventually use satellite connectivity to enhance 5G network coverage, significantly expanding its reach.
The initial satellite features are expected to be available for free, though users may incur additional charges through their mobile operators for more advanced services. Apple itself is investing in developing the necessary infrastructure, in partnership with satellite provider Globalstar.
These developments mark a significant step in enabling iPhone users to remain connected in remote or network-limited environments while laying the groundwork for future satellite-based network enhancements.
