U.S.-based internet domain registrar GoDaddy has been ordered to pay USD 170 million in damages for infringing website development technology patents. A federal jury in Delaware delivered the verdict on Friday, according to a report by Reuters.

The ruling states that GoDaddy violated two patents held by a California-based company named Express Mobile. The company owns multiple patents related to internet and mobile technologies, developed by former IBM engineer Steven Rempel.

In an official statement, GoDaddy said it does not agree with the judgment and intends to appeal if necessary. Meanwhile, Jay Nuttall, the attorney representing Express Mobile, described the ruling as “a recognition of the value of our client’s patents.”

Previously, in 2022, Express Mobile won a similar case against Shopify with a judgment of USD 40 million, although that ruling was later overturned by the court.
