Bangladesh Embarks on Tech-Based Fish Farming and Export Research
The Ministry of Science and Technology has undertaken a research project aimed at producing and exporting high-quality fish in Bangladesh through advanced technological applications. As part of this initiative, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday, October 13, between the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and the National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB). The agreement marks a step forward from research to market-oriented production.
The signing ceremony took place at the conference room of the Ministry of Science and Technology at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the presence of Secretary Md. Anwar Hossain. Professor Dr. Md. Saghir Ahmed, Director General of NIB, signed the MoU on behalf of the Ministry, while Syed Mahmudul Haque, Chairman of BSFF, signed on behalf of the organization. Senior officials from both the Ministry and BSFF were also present.
According to the Ministry’s statement released on Tuesday, October 14, “Under this MoU, NIB will work to promote shrimp aquaculture, hybrid fish, and other export-oriented fish species in Bangladesh utilizing its existing facilities and technological support.” The statement added, “In countries like Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, advanced technology is used to cultivate nutrient-rich and protein-packed fish such as tilapia at low cost while maintaining international quality standards. Applying similar techniques and technologies will open new opportunities for Bangladesh to produce and export premium-grade fish.”
The Ministry further noted that the agreement was signed “to strengthen coordination, joint ventures, and shared technological and financial partnerships among various government institutions through the Ministry of Science and Technology, aiming to advance the country’s development.”
