Baidu’s Botched Bot: Apollo Go’s Plunge in Chongqing
In China’s southwestern city of Chongqing, Baidu’s autonomous robotaxi, Apollo Go, fell into a deep construction pit, local media reported. The incident occurred on August 6, according to The Verge.
The female passenger inside the vehicle was unharmed, and local residents rescued her using a staircase, the reports stated.
A video circulating on Chinese social media shows the white car bearing the Baidu Apollo logo lying at the bottom of a construction ravine. A nearby shopkeeper noted that barriers and warning signs had been placed at the site, but it remains unclear how the vehicle bypassed these obstacles.
Reuters confirmed the location shown in the video but said the cause of the vehicle’s fall remains unknown. Baidu did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.
