China Champions Cooperative Council for AI
Chinese Premier Li Qiang has called for the establishment of an international “World AI Cooperation Organization” during his address at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, warning against monopolistic control of the technology. According to a report by Engadget, Li cautioned that the dominance of a few nations and companies could turn AI into an "exclusive game."
While Li refrained from naming the United States directly, his remarks come amid the backdrop of U.S. export restrictions that have compelled chipmaker NVIDIA to design custom chips for the Chinese market, while Chinese firms like Huawei are developing their own AI processors.
On behalf of China, Li pledged to promote open-source AI development and share AI-related advancements with developing countries.
“The current global governance system for AI is fragmented and inconsistent,” Li said. “We should enhance coordination and build a global framework that everyone can agree on.”
His call for international cooperation reflects growing global concern over the ethical, political, and economic dimensions of AI, as well as efforts to prevent technological polarization.
